Book: Proverbs 2
“For only the godly will live in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it. But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted.”
We live in a culture that lives in the now and often does not think too far into the future. This culture wants absolutes as long as it’s on our terms. To think that God has said there is a day of judgment coming does not naturally strike a chord with our culture because so much time has gone by since it was revealed. Secondly, judgment is not something people like to think about especially when they want to do things their way.
Malachi 4:1-2 says, “The LORD of Heaven’s Armies says, ‘The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed—roots, branches, and all. But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture…’” Almost 2500 years ago this was written and yet it still has not yet happened, but it will, it is coming.
Who are the ‘godly’ with ‘integrity’? Those are people who have been made right because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross. Without accepting what He did on the cross for us we fit into the category of the wicked. The godly obey His wisdom and desire to live out His wisdom in their lives. As God, sent His Son because He loves us so much and wanted to redeem us so we are now called to love those around us and guide them into His wisdom. God did not send Jesus Christ to dies on the cross to pay the penalty of sins for those who are sinless – we have all sinned. We were wicked and God made us right. Therefore, God has called us to go to other sinners who have not yet accepted this gift and help turn them to Him.
There is a day of judgment coming for those who are not following the King. Yes, we do not know when as it has not yet happened but we have the opportunity and the calling by God himself to go and tell them. The Message paraphrase puts it this way, “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name:Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18b-20
