A Great Nation

Book: Proverbs 14

“Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

It is probably politically incorrect to say that sin is the downfall of a nation and obedience to God raises up a nation to greatness but this is what God says. As the children of Israel left Egypt and were heading to the promised land God spoke through Moses and said, “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the world … But if you refuse to listen to the LORD your God and do not obey all the commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you: ” (Deuteronomy 28:1,15).

Citizens can be patriotic by waving their country’s flag, sing their national anthem at the top of their lungs or even buy products only from their country but these things do not make a nation great. What makes a nation great is when the people follow God’s wisdom and receive the blessing that comes with it. When leaders of a nation set aside the directions of God and replace them with their own ideas, a nation spirals downward. The sad thing is they either do not realize this when it is happening or put blinders on pretending that all is good. What God calls sin, sadly, is promoted as good. Isaiah warned of this when he said, “What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.” Isaiah 5:20.

But the responsibility does not just fall on the leaders of a nation especially one with a democratic system. Those who are godly need to consider if God is calling them to take on a leadership role. Some have chosen to get involved in the messy business of politics so as to help lead nations back to what God desires it to be. All have been called to pray for the government that they might live in peace. Sometimes it is easier to complain about where our country is going instead of doing what God is asking. If we individually don’t do what God asks us to do (disobedience) then we should not expect God to bless our nation. We each can bring blessing to our country by following God’s wisdom.

Take some time and prayerfully read through Deuteronomy 28. Consider what God is saying to you through that passage. Help make your nation great!
