Book: Proverbs 23
“Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit.”
Some people work hard without wisdom while others work hard using wisdom. A workaholic is not using God’s wisdom but rather is relying on their own wisdom which will end up cheating them of what God has for them. Matthew 16:26 says “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” If your goal is just to get richer then your focus is probably not what God desires for you.
So how does one know when to “quit”? Or in other words, when does one know how much time they should put into their work? If I was to say you should only put in 36 or 40 hours it would be too simplistic. A farmer puts long hours in at planting and harvesting time, but during the winter months may work shorter days. It would be detrimental to the harvest to work equal shorter hours year round for the farmer.
It is important to have balance in life as well as demonstrating faith in God. If your work is destroying your family what good is that? If you are working out of your strength but not relying on God what eternal values is that?
Take time to consider how God is wanting you to use your time. Answer the question, how you are demonstrating trusting God in your work, as a leader and in your family? Then take time to talk with God about it.
