Book: Proverbs 12
“The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are always cruel.”
God’s heart is for His creation and so are those who are godly. In Matthew 6 we see that God cares for the birds, the lilies, the wildflowers and yes, we are even more valuable to Him then the animals. It is God who feeds the wild animals and the young ravens (Psalm 147:9). He looks after us. He expects we will look after the animals in our care.
Probably one of the most famous psalms in the Bible is the 23rd. You may even know it by heart. It describes how God looks after His people just as a shepherd cares for his flock. The sheep are taken to good places to graze, rest and have access to water. The shepherd ensures the safety of the flock and makes sure that they are protected. The shepherd has a hands on approach towards the sheep making sure each one is healthy and strong.
What is important to the King must be important to those who are His subjects. Therefore, whatever animals God has entrusted us with we need to care for them as He would.
God initially gave this assignment back at the time of creation. In Genesis 1:28, “Then God blessed them and said’, Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Part of the reigning over the animals includes caring for them.
If you have have any pets or animals that you are responsible for, how do you care for them? Is how you care for them the way God cares for His creation?
