Chasing Fantasies

Book: Proverbs 28

“A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty.”

This morning as I was looking at Facebook, there was a posting for the opportunity to be one of seven people chosen to be taught how to earn 1 million dollars in 90 days. Sound appealing? I decided to listen to part of the video pitch just to see what they were offering. I found it interesting that the announcer said that this program was not like the others (get-rich-quick schemes) that you may have sunk hundreds of dollars into already. I am sure there are differences but in my mind the bottom line is that those who get involved are “chasing fantasies”. The only one who gets rich is the one making up these schemes.

Those who work hard, not spending their money on fantasies, will have food enough for themselves, family and able to share with others. Part of working hard includes not over spending. Some people spend to “feel” better which is a form of chasing fantasies. Others spend their whole paycheque and do not save for the future nor for emergencies that may come up. Managing the funds God has provided you with through employment takes work. He expects that you will use it according to His ways.

There are many people who find that they do not have any money left to put into savings at the end of the month. Therefore, when a get-rich-quick schemes comes up they are quick to consider it as it may make life easier for them. They spend the few hundred dollars on it and find out a few months later it failed. Some will admit the failure and move on while others, because of their pride, still will try to hold on and end up loosing more money.

Now take that same hard earned money, and invest it properly, not looking for the quick returns but rather the long term growth and it is amazing what can happen. Small amounts over a long time with average returns can provide a healthy savings account for one’s future. But it all starts with hard work, not dreaming of cars, mansions, and exotic vacations.

What financial fantasies have you chased in the past that have gone against God’s wisdom? Make sure you have confessed it to the Lord and committed to following His stewardship methods. Each cheque you receive, commit to putting part of it towards savings.
