Book: Proverbs 6
“My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instructions. Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck.”
As I was reading these verses I was reminded of the huge responsibility we have as parents to pass on God’s wisdom through word and deed to our offspring. The good things we have been teaching our boys, we want them to internalize and live out. What joy it brings us when we see them using God’s wisdom in decision-making and living.
I remember holding each one of our children in my arms just after they were born and thinking, this little guy is fully dependent on us to provide everything for him. He is helpless and needs us to provide for his needs. One of those needs was and is to train them in the ways of the Lord. Two of them are now adults and once in a while they will come asking for advice. When they ask a question I usually ask what they think is the best solution before giving an answer. It thrills my heart when I hear God’s wisdom coming through their answer. I am still very aware that what I say needs to be in line with God’s wisdom.
I think back to my own upbringing and how my parents taught God’s wisdom. There are times when I reflect back on the life of my dad, who passed away several years ago, and remember how he wanted his son to be well trained in the Lord. He involved me in the various ministries he was leading even at a young age. He spoke at all different churches in the community we lived in and when he did he would bring me along to either sing a solo or just be with him. He encouraged me to go to Bible School. Once I was an adult he would still call me up and spur me on in my faith.
As parents, we need to be learning and living out the knowledge God has provided us with so that we can direct our children along the right and best path. They need to know that it is more precious than anything else. They need to know that it will keep them safe. They need to know that God’s wisdom is more reliable than their own thoughts and ideas. And they will learn it from us.
