Book: Proverbs 25
“If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink. You will heap burning coals of shame on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.”
Merry Christmas to you on this day as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ coming to earth as a baby to give the gift of salvation to all who would receive it!
God loved us so much, even though we were against Him (enemies of His kingdom) that He sent His Son, Jesus, to this earth so that we might be brought back to His Kingdom. Yes, He demonstrated love to us by giving us Jesus in exchange for our sin. He has given us the gift of a new life! This is why Jesus could say in Luke 6, “But to you who are willing to listen,… love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also… Do to others as you would like them to do to you. If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! … Love your enemies! Do good to them.”
One of the most powerful gifts we can give is not to someone who can return the favor, but to someone who from an earthly perspective, might not seem to deserve receiving from us. By giving such a gift we are helping win them over to God’s Kingdom, changing them from an enemy to a friend. Jesus even called us His friend when He said, “You are my friend if you do what I command. I no longer call you slave, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the father told me. You didn’t choose me. I chose you… This is my command: Love each other.” (John 15)
Notice that this proverb focuses on giving to our enemies that which they desperately need to survive. Without food and water a person will die. God gave us exactly what we needed turning us back to Him.
Take time today to thank the Lord for the greatest gift we can receive, Jesus Christ! May you and your family remember the reason our heavenly Father sent His Son to earth as a baby today.
