Book: Proverbs 23
“The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise. So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.”
As a parent, when I see my one teenage boy and two adult boys make wise godly decisions I am so thrilled. It truly is a pleasure to see them using their money, time and talents for the Lord. They are choosing to be wise because they fear God.
For my own parents I have watched them be full of joy when they have seen their children make wise decisions. Seeing my parents faces as each one of their children have graduated from higher education has been that of joy. They have been so proud of each one of us. Even today, my mother enjoys sharing with her friends what each one of her children are doing, their success and their plans.
I remember the first time I took the sermon on Sunday morning at the church my parents had planted. My dad was grinning from ear to ear as I shared what God had laid on my heart to say. I am sure that it wasn’t the best sermon delivered but he was so pleased. He looked forward to the next one I would give.
My parents were thrilled when I started dating my wife. They knew she was a godly woman who loved the Lord and desired to obey and follow Him. The advice my father gave me was “don’t blow it!” We can laugh about his advice but what he was really saying was, “son, we are pleased to see the wisdom you are using in looking for a life partner who loves the Lord and desires to follow Him.” My parents were there, full of joy, when Debbie graduated from Bible school and then, ten minutes later, she accepted my proposal of marriage. It was so important to them that they had traveled the 1300 kilometers to be there for the events.
As a son, I have enjoyed doing those wise things and seeing my parents so blessed and encouraged by my decisions and actions. Even today, I know my mother enjoys hearing what God is teaching me and how He is using me. As a Father, I have been blessed as I have watched our children make wise decisions. I look forward to many more years of joy through the wisdom our children choose to use.
Choosing to be wise by obeying God brings much joy to your heavenly Father. He is watching every step and action you take, cheering you on to be a godly, wise person. You thrill His heart as you use wisdom in your life!
