Book: Proverbs 3
“My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.”
The writer of the book of Hebrews quotes and expands on these verses in chapter 12 encouraging the reader to receive the discipline and correction from the Lord even more than from their earthly fathers. Discipline from God demonstrates that we are His children and that He loves us enough to guide us.
God’s discipline is always perfect and right and yet that doesn’t mean that it is always enjoyable. The result of receiving it is good.
Hebrews 12: 10-11 says, “For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”
God’s heart in disciplining His children, us, is so that we will experience “a peaceful harvest of right living”. In other words we live the way God created us to live. We can only be fulfilled by allowing Him to correct and discipline us.
