Book: Proverbs 3
“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.”
Within a few weeks of becoming a pastor, the regional fund developer for the denomination was in town and took me out for lunch. We had a great time getting to know one another as well as talking about investments and financial strategies. Just before he dropped me off at the church he asked me a question that I will never forget. He asked, “Who do you think the worst tithers are in the church?” Since I had not thought about that question before I did not have an answer for him. He said that often it is the pastors as they feel like they have already given so much. I made a decision right there to go into the office and ask the secretary who wrote out the pay cheques to take off my tithe at source. I do not know if pastors actually are the worst tithers but I do know that I want to do what God desires as that is wisdom.
A few years ago we decided to get 6 laying hens so that we would have fresh eggs. We also committed to giving eggs away to neighbors and others as a way of building friendships. At some point we were giving away more eggs than we as a family were consuming. My understanding is that laying hens generally will produce five (5) eggs a week which would mean we should get thirty (30) eggs a week. For over a year and a half the hens were laying almost an egg a day. The result was that we collected forty (40) eggs a week. I believe God provided those extra eggs as He knew we would be giving them away.
Take time to consider how you are “honoring the Lord with your wealth.” Are you honoring Him “with the best part of everything you produce?” Wisdom is truly obeying what He says to do. We benefit much more by being obedient than by not following His wisdom.
