Humble Your Self

Book: Proverbs 16

“The Lord detests the proud; they will surely be punished.”

How much does God hate pride? This is what He says in Leviticus 26:18-20 to those who refuse to obey Him, “I’ll break your strong pride: I’ll make the skies above you like a sheet of tin and the ground under you like cast iron. No matter how hard you work, nothing will come of it: No crop out of the ground, no fruit off the trees.” God will not allow the proud to stand for long because they are trying to steal His glory.

God is the one who created this world and holds it together. He is the one who makes the seeds grow in the farmer’s field. He is the one who made the air that we breath and the ability for us to think and work. He provides the opportunities for us to earn an income and serve Him. He opens doors so that we can move up. He assigns talents and gifts so that they might honor Him. None of us can say we did it.

There is a fictional story that involves God and a scientist who believes he also can create life. They set up a challenge. The day of the match comes and God says to the proud scientist “you go first as I have already done it.” The scientist bends down and picks up some dirt from the ground to make life out of it. God stopped him and said, “what are you doing? I made that dirt. You go make your own dirt!” Without dirt that once proud scientist was lowered to his rightful place.

When we work with the Lord, acknowledging His sovereignty, His authority, and His power we have the privilege to stand with Him. When He works through us to do a great work or miracle, we can enjoy the fact that He used us, but be careful to acknowledge that all glory belongs to Him. When people thank us for what we have done by being open to the work of the Holy Spirit through us we can accept it and give God the glory for it. He then is the one who raises us up. Jesus says in Mathew 23:12 “But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” It is always much better to be exalted by God because He is standing with us when this happens.

As you go through your day make sure you acknowledge God as the one who provides for you and is the source of all your success. Until you can create dirt out of nothing, keep yourself humble!
