Book: Proverbs 30
“There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise: …Hyraxes – they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocks.”
Have you ever heard of hyraxes? In the original Hebrew language they are called shaphan. They are a small fury animal somewhat like an oversized guinea pig or marmot (some have called it a rock rabbit). Their feet are not designed to dig so they have to find their home instead of making a home. To the children of Israel they were “unclean” and not to be eaten (Leviticus 11:5, Deuteronomy 14:7) and yet in this proverb they are called “unusually wise”.
The hyraxes can’t dig a hole to live in and hve very few defenses. But, it is wise enough to protect itself by living in the rocks. Even though it is weak it lives in a stronghold. The rocks guard and protect it from predators.
What would happen if a hyrax decided that he was not going to accept the protection of the rocks anymore but fend for himself as he wanted to be a self made hyraxes? How long would it take before he was on the menu of a predator? Probably not very long.
As we understand our weakness and need for protection we should run for the eternal rock that provides ultimate protection and that is the Lord God. Isaiah 26:3-4 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.” You may feel small and weak but God says that you are wise if you trust in Him, and if you focus your thoughts on Him. Why, because He will protect you so that you can have perfect peace.
Take time to thank Him for being your eternal Rock!
