Proverbs 13:1 …a mocker refuses to listen to correction
As a teenager I remember when my friend’s boss invited us to the Terry Winters Crusade. Terry Winters was a prominent evangelist who traveled about the country in the early ’80s visiting communities, even remote ones like mine. Instead of me being grateful that someone cared enough about my spiritual well being to invite me to hear God’s message, I was actually scornful. I recall my friends and I laughing and ridiculing the one who invited us even though we did end up attending the event. At the event the speaker gave a clear correction for our lives. It was something like “All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own” from Isaiah 53.6. I’m quite sure that the speaker explained how God loved us so much that He gave His Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we might be reconciled to God and spend eternity with Him. What I had to do was repent or turn to God’s path for my life and receive by faith this free gift of salvation, but ….I didn’t. You see, I was a mocker and I wasn’t even listening!
It is not easy to receive correction or even believe that you need it. I did not give my heart to the Lord at that event but about five months later I did! I am so thankful that I was finally willing to listen to correction! This correction was for my eternal well being.
It takes humility to receive correction. Be like Saint Peter who reminds us “humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honour”. Godly correction is for our benefit.
