Book: Proverbs 22
“Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction.”
Who are the people in your life that you know who are wise, who fear God and obey Him? Listen to these peoples words and carefully think through how you ought to apply them into your life. Spend time with them and engage them in conversations. Observe how they live and follow their example.
You might want to read writings or books by a wise Christian author. These can be a great source of wisdom. Don’t limit yourself to contemporary authors as some who have past on have left some valuable works. It is amazing how much one can learn from such people. But always remember your final source of wisdom is Gods Word, the Bible.
The phrase, “apply your heart” emphasizes that listening is more than just hearing words. The wise consciously considers, wrestles with ideas from deep within, and determines how to relevantly act on the wisdom. What good are words from the wise if they are ignored or not applied into ones life.
I have known people who have a great amount of knowledge, both biblical knowledge and scientific knowledge but have done a poor job of using it in their lives. This is sad. They often are proud of their knowledge even though their life is a disaster. Wisdom is knowing how to use knowledge and doing it.
Once again I would encourage you to take a few minutes and consider who are the people that you know who are wise, fear God and obey Him. Then consider and set a plan in place to spend more time with them, read their books, or get to know them better. What can you do today to hear the words of a wise person?
