Love God

Book: Proverbs 21

“Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.”

I have noticed that when a man proposes to a lady by getting down on one knee, asking her if she will marry him and opens up a box with a sparkling diamond ring in it, that when she says, “yes” the focus is not so much on the ring but on their love for each other. I have yet to see a lady grab the ring, hug it and kiss it and say, “I love you ring” but I have seen her hug and kiss her fiance and say to him “I love you!” When she does admire how beautiful the ring is on her finger, it is in the context of his love for her. She enjoys the ring and wears it proudly because of her love for him.

In your life you can either love the Lord your God or you can love the things that He has made and provided. Both in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 6:5) and New Testament (Matthew 22:37-38)
God says, ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” Notice where the focus of the love is. The writer of Ecclesiastes experimented to see if loving pleasures would satisfy and this is what he found: “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.” (2:1) Having your love focused on the pleasures of the creation instead of the Creator Himself will eventually bring dissatisfaction.

You have heard the verse in Matthew 6:21 that says, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” As you treasure or love God, your heart will be focused on Him and you will enjoy the blessings He provides as an expression of His love for you. Your focus will not be so much on the gifts He gives but on the joy of your relationship with Him. You will want to do those things that please Him.

Take time to tell God that you love Him. Then the next time He gives you a blessing or gift enjoy it in love and thanksgiving for Him, as a young lady would in receiving a diamond ring from her beloved.
