Multiply Your Days

Book: Proverbs 9

“Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life.”

Whenever I see the numbers 911 it makes me think of emergency. This quote is from Proverbs 9:11 and so it makes me wonder if there is something very significant in it. Living wisely, by God’s wisdom, compared to living by our own wisdom and desires will determine the length of our time on earth.

Often we call the verses in Exodus 20 the Ten Commandments and see them as laws we must follow. Have you ever looked at them through the lens of wisdom? Each one of the statements is full of wisdom which the wise live by. One of them actually has a promise attached to it. Exodus 20:12 says, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Ephesians 6 adds a comment before quoting this verse by saying, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

As a parent, I expect that my children will obey what I ask them to do. The reason is that I want the very best for them, have much more experience in life, and can see things they might not be observing. Therefore it is wise on their part to obey. If I see one of my sons heading towards danger I am going to say, “stop”! My expectation is that they would stop. By him stopping it could literally save his life. It is a 911 call on his life.

God’s wisdom starts with fearing God and therefore obeying Him and His wisdom. The opposite is true as seen in Ecclesiastes 8:13 “The wicked will not prosper, for they do not fear God. Their days will never grow long like the evening shadows.” Those who do not follow God’s wisdom may see their life shortened.

God loves us so much that He wants the very best for us therefore He has spoken wisdom to us. He does not see it as an option for us to follow but as essential. He knows the disastrous results if we choose not to follow wisdom and the blessing if we do follow it. God’s commands are actually wisdom to live by. There are those who say that the Bible is all about what we can’t do but let me suggest the Bible is all about giving us wisdom so that we can do all that we were created for and live a long fulfilled life.
