Book: Proverbs 2
“He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the path of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.”
Before David became King he was constantly being chased by King Saul. There were times when David was on one side of the mountain and King Saul was on the other. They were close but God provided protection. Even when David had the opportunity to stop the King from chasing him down by killing him when he was asleep, his integrity before God did not allow him to. When finally it was over, David sang this song of praise to God, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies…”(2 Samuel 22:2-4).
Many times in the Book of Psalms David repeats that the Lord is his shield:
“But you, O LORD, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.” (Psalm 3:3)
“God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right.” (Psalm 7:10)
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. (Psalm 18:2)
David had faith that God would protect him. He knew there was none who could come up against him and succeed as long as God was his protection. This thought is repeated in the New Testament for us today where it says in 1 Peter 1:5, “And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.” Our faith in God allows Him to protect us.
Does this mean that we don’t have any other part to play? No, just as David had to flee from Saul, we also need to take action – action that is led by the Holy Spirit. God will put that mountain between us and our enemies. He is my shield.
