Book: Proverbs 15
“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”
Have you ever noticed that when someone comes to you who is all upset and are yelling that if you choose not to meet them at their volume level nor their tone but rather respond in a calm and quiet voice that they will start to come down to your level. With time the confrontation begins to move from a theatrical act to a calm discussion which can lead to a solution.
I am always amazed at the high percentage of times that issues people are upset about end up being a misunderstanding or miscommunication that is easily solved. Their angry thoughts have created a larger issue than it really is and sometimes their anger and harsh words create a bigger separate issue.
A person who gives a “gentle answer” is really a peacemaker. Matthew 5:9 says, “God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.” To be a Kingdom builder you must be a child of God. A child of God is a peacemaker.
As you go through this day, be aware of your tone and volume level and consider if it is creating peace or tension. Ask God to help you be a peacemaker and one who deflects anger.
