Book: Proverbs 23

“Don’t fail to discipline your children…”

We have all probably seen a short video clip of a young child saying or doing something that makes us laugh until we realize that the reason the child is acting this way is because they have not been corrected or disciplined. Jump 10 to 15 years later in the life of that child and it may not be funny at all. Society may have to pick up the pieces because they have not been trained in the way they should go.

Children need to be corrected, guided and taught to love the Lord with all their heart. There are those who would experiment with allowing a child to be self-taught, decide on their own what is right and wrong and not allow family, community or culture to guide them. The reality of this is that they are teaching their children many negative things indirectly.

God’s plan is for children to be raised, guided and directed, by parents who will show them His ways. God’s way is always perfect and right for children and adults alike.

The comment is sometimes said, “Children don’t come with an instruction manual.” Although, this is sometimes how parents feel, God has provided His Word, the Bible to help parents train their children. One part of that is the example parents are to their children by fearing the Lord and living life from the wisdom He gives. To do that, parents need to be reading and following “the instruction manual.” Parents (and grandparents) also have the opportunity to share God’s living Word with their children.

In 2 Timothy 1 we see that Timothy’s mother and grandmother had a great influence on him. It says, “I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. And I know that same faith continues in you.” God designed the family so that parents would influence, train and guide their children to love, honor and obey God so that things would go well for them.

How are you helping shape the children in your life? Is your life an example of godly living? Do they know that you are blessed by obeying and following the King? Do you encourage them to love and honor the King? Take time to ask the Lord to help you shape these children in the way He desires.
