Book: Proverbs 12
“A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.”
Anyone who works with people knows that there comes the time whether intentional or not that they will come under verbal attack. Whether you work in the service industry, retail, healthcare, teaching or any other field that interacts with people, you are bound to have instances of accusations and insults.
One time, as I worked in the retail healthcare setting, I had a customer yelling at me because of a problem with his medication. His intimidating stance and blast of words were very aggressive. It seemed as if I was the one who had caused his problem. As I stayed calm and gently questioned him about the situation, I discovered that he wasn’t upset at me or even my place of employment but rather at government red tape over his medication coverage. I quickly empathized with his situation, gave him some solutions on how to navigate the requirements, explained what we had already done to assist him and showed him some areas that we could help expedite the process. As we conversed his anger gradually dissipated and I could see the renewed look of hope in his countenance. We were both happy and relieved with the outcome.
It is so easy to get our hackles up and start defending ourselves when under this kind of barrage, but God has a better way to handle it. He says to STAY CALM! When we stay calm and unflustered we are in a much better state of mind to actually help the person who is overcome with frustration. When we are not busy trying to explain and defend ourselves we can think clearly to come up with a satisfactory or even excellent solution to the problem.
When volatile situations arise, keep your mind focused on God, the giver of peace and trust in Him to see you through.
