Sweet Perfume of a Friend

Book: Proverbs 27

“The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.”

It is wise having a close friend in whom we can openly share struggles, concerns and dreams with and who will speak back into our lives with the word of God. God has blessed me over the years with several men whom I have been able to share my heart with, and in return they have spoken wisdom back into my life. They have prayed with me, shared the Word with me and challenged me. Their godly advice has been something very special that I have highly valued.

One of the keys to receiving good counsel from a friend that is “as sweet as perfume and incense” is by having friends who follow closely the Lord. Choose your friends carefully. You want to choose people who “fear God” and speak His truth. Consider the words in 2 Corinthians 2:14-16

“But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?

Life giving counsel is what we want to be receiving from as well as giving to, our friends. As we follow Him (along in His triumphal procession) He chooses us to be that sweet perfume to others. Notice that there is a difference in how the smell is received. To one group it is received as life-giving and to the other something horrible. It is not our responsibility how people on earth receive the perfume but notice how it reaches to heaven, “Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God.”

People love to give advice and counsel to friends who are in need. Not all counsel is equal or good. If you are needing counsel, seek out a friend who you know “fears God” and is walking closely with Jesus.
