Book: Proverbs 7
“She is often in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner.”
Let’s switch the word “she” for “Temptation” to make this verse clearer. It would then read, “Temptation is often in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner”. Consider the simple task of purchasing food for your family at your local grocery store. How many types of temptations are waiting there for you? For one person it may be all the choices of “junk food” instead of buying healthier food. For another it may be all the options of prepared food instead of making meals from scratch to keep on budget. And still another, it may be the “extra” items that are not needed and not in the budget but are so attractive. Now it is time to head to the cashier and what is sitting on the racks? Gossip magazines, beauty magazines, and other magazines providing man’s wisdom instead of God’s wisdom. You know they are placed there for a reason. As customers wait in line they will pick up the magazines and scan through them. Hooked!
Now what temptations might be waiting on the street or street corner for you? What type of store tempts you to purchase or covet items? You might not be an extreme shopaholic where you have items in your closet with the price tags still on them but temptation is still waiting. Maybe it’s restaurants, fast food, entertainment or even your cup of coffee you “just have to have”.
Another temptation is the pressure to accept the belief systems in the culture of today. They are made to be palatable often with celebrities promoting them. On their own they may sound fine or even good but once God’s Word shines on them it is clear they are not right. Remember, “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7). Without fearing God we will give into temptation.
What temptations are in your marketplace, in the places you travel through? Identifying them is often the first step in making sure that you are not overcome by them.
