The Rooster

Book: Proverbs 30

“There are three things that walk with stately stride – no, four that strut about: …the strutting rooster …”

As a teenager I raised chickens and had up to 25 laying hens and one rooster at any one time. I remember coming home one day from school, and entering the house where the phone was ringing. I answered the phone and it was one of our neighbors explaining to me that they thought one of my chickens had got loose and was down at the beach dead killed by a stray dog. Now when the tide went out in front of my parents house you could walk on sand for about a quarter of a mile. After hanging up the phone, I looked out over the sand to see if I could see anything. Way out on the sand I could see the dog with something.

I put on some boots and headed out over the sand to investigate. As I got closer, the dog took off and I could see that he had left it behind. When I got to the chicken, I realized that it was my rooster, it had lost every single feather on its body and it was still alive although very weak. I picked it up, brought it home and rinsed the sand off it in warm water. I then put it in a cardboard box with a light to provide it with some heat. When I went to bed that night I didn’t know if it was going to make it or not but the next morning it was clear that it was ready and wanting to get back to the hen house.

Now before this incident, this rooster use to strut its stuff around the chicken run and the times I went in there he came over to me and would let me know he was in charge. There were times he would peck and try to use his claws on me.

When I returned him to the chicken run he carried on strutting around as if nothing had changed. I do have to admit it was comical as he still didn’t have any feathers! He continued to act as one would expect a rooster to, even though his physical appearance had completely changed.

How do you see yourself? According to 1 Peter 2: 9, “You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” Even if your circumstances change, (you loose all your feathers), you are still who God says you are. You can still “strut around” showing others the goodness of God!
