Book: Proverbs 13
“Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard prosper.”
Work is not evil and something to be avoided. Adam, before he sinned, was assigned work by God to “Tend and watch over” the land of Eden. God does not give evil things or things that should be avoided. He gives good things.
In 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 the Apostle Paul wrote, “Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living.” Note he says this. “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ”. This is not a nice little add on Paul puts in here but rather he is stating in whose authority this command is being made.
I have listened to peoples’ dreams as they have shared what they want in life. Some of them are expecting that it will just be given to them on a silver platter with out them lifting a finger. They are unwilling to get up and do what it takes to move in the direction of their dream however they are quick to let others know that they should help them.
There is a balance when it comes to work. This verse is not applauding workaholics. It is saying that we are built to work and need to do so. Almost everyone can do some work even if it is volunteering.
What is your attitude towards work? Ask God if there is anything He wants to say to you about it.
