This world is full of people with problems. Our merciful hearts hear of troubles and long to set things right, especially for our dear ones. We like to smooth out their path by blasting down their mountains and filling in their gullies. We get busy strategizing and problem solving. But we need to be like the hymn writer and say:
“Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!”
I remember one time when one of the gals I was mentoring was struggling with finances. She was barely making ends meet and had some unexpected expenses come up. I asked the Lord what I should do. “Should I give her money, Lord?” I felt that the Lord said no but to take it to Him in prayer. As we prayed she realized that she needed to repent and ask forgiveness for some unwise spending. Then she thanked God and believed by faith the promise that He shall supply all her needs according to His riches in glory. It wasn’t long after, we saw her get a pay increase in her job and an unexpected gift of money! God was showing her that He is Jehovah Jireh which means God our provider!
Your role is not always to fix their problem. Your role is to pray for your mentees. Cry and pray with your mentees. Speak the truth in love into their lives. Listen to their troubles and cares. But remember to take it to the Lord in prayer!
God says in 1 Peter 5:7 “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you”. We can give our problems to Him knowing that He cares for us and that nothing is too difficult for Him to handle. Jesus says that we will have trials, troubles and temptations but we can still be filled with peace because we have Him.
John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
